I truly believe First Baptist has a Great Commitment to the Great Commission, which says:  “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.”   We have also taken the words of Acts 1:8 seriously which says:  “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”  And that doesn’t just mean Surfside Beach! Now you may be asking yourself: “How our church has done this?”  Well did you know about all the “Ministries” we are actively involved in and support physically, financially and prayerfully through our Church? I sat down recently and started thinking about all that we do and it really blew me away!  Just take a look at this list. . . Remembering that it isn’t even all of the ministries of our church.
SOME of the ministries we are GOING and SERVING through:

South Strand Helping Hands ~ provides food & resources to needy families
Street Reach ~ prepare/serve dinner, lead devotion 4th Friday of every month
Mobile Meals ~ deliver meals monthly to shut-ins
Sun Care Unit~ provide FREE cold water and sun care to visitors @ Surfside pier

Women’s Ministry~ various studies and fellowship opportunities for our women
Weekly Men’s Bible Study~ foster growth through the study of God’s word
Senior Adult Ministry~ Keen-Agers meeting monthly for growth and fellowship
Nursing Home Ministry~ monthly “birthday parties” for residents

I could go on and on listing all that God is doing in and through our church. Thinking about our Sunday School, Discipleship Training, Nursery, children, Youth, Senior Adults, Choir ministry, Deacon Ministry, and weekly worship opportunities.  But space limits me. And I could not pass up the opportunity to help you understand how God is truly working, blessing and doing great things in the life of First Baptist Church.  Through all of these ministries God is using us as a testimony to our community and world. Lives are being changed for the better, and the Kingdom of God is growing as we seek to serve Him.  Remembering: our ministry is not just Surfside Beach, but the world!

If you would like more information about these and other opportunities for service, please contact the church office or just read the Bible, our monthly newsletter and weekly bulletins, there you will find all the information you need to begin serving the Lord.

Thank you for allowing God to work through our church in serving Him.  May we always keep our priority for ministry to be the GLORY OF GOD, not us.  If we will, God will continue to bless and grow us as His church here in Surfside Beach.

It’s the sound of children learning Bible verses. . . and there is NO DOUBT it makes God smile!

AWANA is looking for “LISTENERS” to help them this fall.  Simply, you will spend a short time with the children during AWANA before Sunday’s pm service and listen to them rehearse  God’s word.  If the thought has EVER crossed your mind that there isn’t anything YOU can do. . It’s doesn’t get more important than this!     Call Tim @ 902-1434. . the children are waiting!

Library Notes

Shelby and I would like to welcome Connie Lynch to the Library Committee. We are glad to have Connie and look forward to working with her.  Stop by and welcome Connie and check out our new books.

The June Newsletter had already gone to print when we had our Family Game Night on May 30th, but we really had a lot of fun that night.  It was fun to see Pastor Jeff play matching Veggie Tales with the children and Pastor David and some of the single ladies playing  the game “WHAT WOULD JESUS DO?”    (At our next Family Game Night, we recommend hard hats if you are going to sit behind the kids who “play” DOMINOES.) If you did miss it, you can still get in on the fun.  Just come to the Library, check out one or two of the games, take ‘em home, grab your favorite snacks, invite a couple of friends and have your OWN GAME NIGHT.

August is almost here and that is our inventory month.  Please look around your house, your kids rooms, under their beds, in your cars, all of those wonderful little places where things turn up that you forgot you ever had.  We have a lot of overdue books scattered around and we would like to find them before inventory next month.

Thanks for your help and we’ll see you in the Library.

The Music Corner

My!!  We are so blessed- - - God has answered prayers in so many ways.  The response to our petition for help in presenting, “The Living Christmas Tree,” has been nothing short of miraculous.  As of this writing, we have, including the choir, a total of 62 people committed to this program.  We just want to say a big THANK YOU for your interest and commitment.  It will be work, fun and a tremendous blessing to all who participate in bringing honor and glory to our God!

Also, thanks to the church for allowing us to take advantage of a fantastic opportunity to obtain a tree for use in this event.  Mark Barber worked long and hard to locate a tree, negotiate a great price and arrange to have it delivered.  We were able to obtain a metal tree with all the accessories necessary for a performance for $4000.  This tree originally sold new for $20,000.  Freight fees are $1,500.  The music department is contributing $3,000 from its budget to this purchase and at our church conference on June 21st, the church agreed to provide the balance of $2,500.  Thank you CHURCH for your wonderful support.  If anyone would like to contribute directly to the “Christmas Tree Fund,”  please see Bob.

The rehearsal schedule for the Christmas program will commence in August and the performance dates are December 19, 20, and 21 @ 7 p.m. each evening.
Thanks for allowing me the tremendous privilege of being a part of such a loving and caring church body and directing the music and worship programs.
Again, we are all so blessed.

Singing for Him,
Bob

WMU News & Updates

God does hear and answer prayers!!! Many prayers were answered as 172 plus bikers received Christ as Savior during Bike Week May 12-17 as churches in our Waccamaw Association gave free gas along with the plan of salvation welcoming visitors to the Grand Strand and into the family of God.

We are also seeing prayers answered through the Sun Care Ministry at the Surfside Beach pier.  Thanks to all the wonderful folks who have volunteered to help.  If you have not had your opportunity to serve yet, just give me a call at 995-1320 and I’ll be happy to put you on the schedule.  We meet and greet many folks from all over the world as we offer free sun care and a cup of cold water in Jesus’ name.  This is a blessing you don’t want to miss!  We serve from 10-3 pm Monday through Saturday and from 1 – 4 pm on Sunday.  We do have folks from other churches, so hurry up and get your name on the list.

What a wonderful time we had feeding the lifeguards, listening to their testimonies and fellowshipping with them Tuesday night.  Thanks to all who helped.

Another ministry we do here that reaches people from around the world is a Seaman’s Caps Ministry.  If you know how to knit or crochet, contact me for further information.  If you don’t knit or crochet, maybe you would like to help by contributing yarn or money to buy yarn for someone else to make caps.  These are given to seamen who come into the port of Charleston.  We need to have them by November.

Since July 4th is on Friday this year, we will move our meeting to the 2nd Thursday, July 10th @ 7 pm in the fellowship hall.

Our ladies breakfast will be Saturday July 12th this quarter from 9—10:30 a.m.  Our special speaker will be Joy Eastridge, daughter of Don & Donna Turner, along with special music.  Come and bring a friend!

Our SUN CARE BOOTH is up and running!  If you can donate sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) that would be GREAT!  Give it to Martha, or bring by the church office!
Serving with love, Martha

Shawl Ministry

It has been a busy month for our Shawl Ministry.  We were able to visit with 7 precious people and share the love of God in giving them a shawl.  Perhaps, it means more to US, than it does to them.  The smiles on their faces is worth every moment it takes to crochet these shawls.   If you want to BE blessed and be a BLESSING by participating in this ministry, contact Susan Evans at 843-299-0084.  And if you know of ANYONE who needs a lift in their spirits, this may be the very thing that makes the difference.  Let Susan know so we can be the hands and feet of God. . . . . Until then, enjoy the stories. . . . .

Susan visited Ms. Mildred to give her a shawl from the Shawl Ministry.  She found her walking in the hall and was able to join her on the walk back to her room.  Although she insisted that Susan sit in the SAME chair with her, Susan took a sit on the floor during their visit.  Ms. Mildred wanted know what she had done to get a gift, After being told it was just because she was special, she gave a big smile!

As Ms. Beulah held the shawl in her hands, she said she could feel the prayers.  We also brought a shawl for Elvin, but he was at a doctor’s visit in Georgetown.  Beulah shared about many prayers that God had answered in her life.  Recently, Elvin was coughing and could not sleep, and she said after she prayed, he was able to get a full night’s rest.  We are going to come back another time to get a picture of Elvin and his shawl for our scrapbook.

Jim said that he appreciated the shawl.  His wife, Helen, was very appreciate that we came by and for all the prayers.  She said she could tell that prayers do work as Jim was doing so much better and that she contributed it all to the prayers.

Donna placed the shawl around his shoulders and made the statement that he gets cold so the shawl was wonderful!  While we were there, Marty picked up the card that is sent with shawls, read it, put it down, then picked it up again and read the card from  to back.  He continued to do this.  Each time he looked at his name, he pointed!  He seemed so proud!

Anita was so excited to see is.  She is the most bubbly and enthusiastic lady!  She was so appreciative of the shawl, and made the statement it would keep her warm when she got cold.  (She said we would understand that when we got older!!)  We all laughed as if we were at a girl’s spend-the-night party.  After this picture, she said, “Just call us the Three Muskateers.”

From Donna:  Thank you, thank you, and thank you again!  I love the Shawl, the colors are perfect. . . And more than that I enjoyed our short visit.  I really enjoyed talking with you and I thank you sincerely for the thoughtfulness of the shawl.  I love the colors, reminds me so much of how my Mom was able to crochet so many things.  It is one of the most wonderful things to see people from the same mindset (Christian Love) doing things like this.

Susan Evans

thankyou

Your group is one of God’s special blessings.  I appreciate the “Shawl Ministry” coming to my home to bring me one of your special shawls when I had my operation.  It felt so warm and cozy around my shoulders.
May the Lord bless you all and help you carry on His work in such a loving way.
Anita Curtis

Sam &  I are having a wonderful time.  Especially now that my folks are happy in their assisted living community.  Thanks for your prayers for them and us as we were open to God’s loving them through us.  We were given so much love in return.  That is just like God to do it that way.  We are sending an address for you all.  Our mail is being forwarded to us.  We have been so busy and out of range, traveling and staying in National Parks. . . Rustic!
In Christ,
Sam & Betsy

We just wanted to take a moment and thank all of you who have donated to the FOSTER CARE MINISTRY  and HEARTS WITH HANDS through donating items for the bags that we prepare.  So many times, these children  leave their homes with only the clothes on their backs, and your donations  not only help to meet their physical needs, but also show them God’s love in a tangible way.  We couldn't begin to thank all of you by name, so we extend this thank you to the MANY of you have supported this great ministry.  KEEP GIVING!
All for Him,
Robin Ziolkowski
and Ann Harris

To Butch & Robin Ziolkowski -

Dear Church Family,
The staff of Intracoastal Outreach would like to express our thankfulness for feeding us this summer. We are very appreciative of the time and expense of this ministry you have provided on our behalf.  We consider you “partners” in our ministry this summer, because your valuable contribution to us enables us to do what we do each summer.  We thank you again and pray for the Lord’s blessing on your church this summer!

How many times should I pray?

“God, I’ve been praying about the same issue for a long time, but nothing seems to be happening.   I honestly don’t know what to do about it and sometimes, I feel like giving up.”

Are these your thoughts and questions?  We live in a culture where we want and even expect instantaneous results.  But God works in His own time and His own way.  I John 5:14-15 says,  “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.  And if we know that he hears us-whatever we ask-we know that we have what we asked of him.”  God not only wants us to pray, but He also wants to answer our prayers.  By praying, we are opening up our spirit to receive the power and blessings of God.  The more time we spend with God, the more our prayers will align with His will.

Today, take the time to write out a prayer describing an issue of great concern to you.  Then write one or more of these verses on the bottom of your prayer page as an accompanying prayer.  Pray those prayers frequently until you receive an answer:  I John 5:14-15; Hebrews 11:6; Jeremiah 32”27

Have a blessed month. . . In service to the Lamb,
Barbara

Prayer Ministry

Our Prayer Ministry continues to grow with requests that come almost daily, many of which are of an immediate nature.  Aren’t we glad God does not put us on hold or ask us to leave our message after the beep.  He immediately hears and answers our prayers.  He answers in 3 different ways: Yes, No or Wait A While.  Never does He answer maybe .  The waiting gets difficult sometimes, but God’ grace is readily available.  However, we often have our eyes and hearts on the request and miss the beauty of God’s grace.  You see prayer is a matter of the heart.  Hebrews 4:16 says, “Let us, therefore, come boldly unto the throne of grace that we may obtain mercy and grace to help in time of need.”

Do what you must to ensure that you pray daily, regularly, habitually, and DO remember that prayer is not about you (or me).  It is about God and about your walk with Him, and about your being a man or woman after God’s own heart.

From Brian (the Youth guy)

I got up early one morning  and rushed right into the day;
I had so much to accomplish,  that I didn’t take time to pray.
Problems just tumbled about me,  and heavier came each task;
“Why doesn’t God help me?”  I wondered.  He answered: “You didn’t ask.”
I wanted to see joy and beauty, but the day toiled on, gray and bleak;
I wondered why God didn’t show me,  He said, “But you didn’t seek.”
I tried to come into God’s presence, I used all my keys at the lock:
God gently and lovingly chided; “My child, you didn’t knock.”
I woke up early this morning and paused before entering the day;
I had so much to accomplish That I had to take time to pray.

Unity

The word unity has been thrown around a lot lately.  I am not making light of it, or saying I am tired of hearing it.  In this world of division, divorce, separation, etc. it is great to hear about something that binds us together.

At MFuge, the camp pastor, Sam Hill, talked about unity and how churches need to be unified.  He told a story about when he was a youth and how he “picked” on a younger student.  The student’s family left the church.  Many months later Sam and his mom were shopping when they ran into the other student’s mom.  The mother said how they liked the church and didn’t want to leave, but they left because their son did not feel like he belonged.  Sam said, “I am the reason the other student left.”

Satan uses a divide and conquer strategy.  I know we use phrases like, “Boys will be boys,” and other terms to dismiss behavior, but does it help the situation?  Where do these “boys” learn such actions?  The answer to that is easy, from adults.  How many relationships have you severed all in the name of pride?

Sam said, “If there is someone in this room that you have wronged, or need to ask for forgiveness from, get up and do that now.”  It didn’t take long.  Students and adults started moving about the room.  Just imagine this happening in a church.  People that have held grudges for years over things they probably have forgotten about moving in the direction of forgiveness!  “But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will you Father forgive your trespasses,” Matthew 6:15.

Unity starts with forgiveness.  Holding a grudge, gossiping, an unforgiving heart is not what Christ wants.  He wants us to forgive others just as He forgave us, unconditionally.  Forgiveness leads to the unity we desire.  “I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, endeavoring to keep the unity of Spirit in the bond of peace,” Ephesians 4:1-3.  Be a peacemaker in your home.  Is this easy?  No, but show me where Christ said following Him was going to be.
